5月5日は、日本の子供の日です。
以前は、男の子の日とされていましたが、現在では男女問わず子供の成長を祝います。

子供の日には、多くの家庭で鯉のぼりが上がります。
「鯉」は、強くて流れが速くて強い川でも元気に泳ぎ、滝をも上ります。
そんなたくましい鯉のように、子どもたちが元気に大きくなることをお願いする意味が込められています。

Children’s Day is an annual holiday held throughout Japan that takes place on May 5th.

Until 1948 it was known as Boy’s Day but was then changed to Children’s Day to be more inclusive.

On Children’s Day, many families fly carp streamers (koinobori).

The fish known as carp (koi in Japanese) are seen as symbolic of boys.

Carp are energetic and strong, characteristics desirable in young boys.
